To accomplish its goals of bettering Nigerian education and research, the Nigerian Research and Education Network (NgREN) has organized a number of working groups. One of these, the Network Security Working Group, focuses on protecting the electronic infrastructure used by NgREN member institutions.
Meeting quarterly and including experts from nine institutions in five clusters, the group has seven major objectives. Its first is to drive the creation of policies for network security, including guidelines and standards, as well as to create strategies for building security capacity and enforcement within NgREN. Second, the group coordinates the development of best practices for network security risk management for NgREN infrastructure. Third, it supervises third parties, coordinating network access and identity management for those providing and developing services for the network.
The other goals of the Network Security Working Group involve technical and practical objectives, including offering guidance for protecting against specific kinds of network attacks and disseminating advice on achieving a practical balance between network security and usability. The group has also been tasked with coordinating with other NgREN working groups to maintain security.
